This article highlights the increasing use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) by autistic people, with a focus on nonspeaking autistic children. It points out the limited academic attention given to AAC use by speaking autistic adults and provides an overview of the speech differences, technologies, and strategies adopted by this population. The article also discusses barriers to AAC use and offers suggestions for autistic adults, supporters, and researchers to prioritize communication and address the research gaps in this area.
