Disability: A Natural Part of Being Human

View Sources

“A Disability is any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities and interact with the world around them.” Its impact on a person is based on the specific health condition in interaction with personal and environmental factors, such as negative attitudes, inaccessible environments, and limited social support. Disability is a natural form of human variation.

A Disability may be temporary or permanent; visible or invisible; born with or acquired at any time. A Disability may limit a person’s movements, senses, or activities in a minor or significant way. A person may need to seek professional assistance and technology from health, education, therapeutic, and other entities. They may also need support from their family, friends, school, workplace, and community to participate in society fully. Almost every person will experience a Disability at some point in their life.

A Disability Justice Framework Understands that:

  • All bodies are unique and essential.
  • All bodies have strengths and needs that must be fulfilled.
  • People are powerful, not despite the complexities of their bodies, but because of them.
  • All bodies are confined by ability, race, gender, sexuality, class, nation-state, religion, and more, and people cannot separate them.

What this means for you

Shift your thinking. Being Disabled isn't bad. It's a form of human variation. And it's partly created by the world we live in.
